World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – saw fighting come to an end when an armistice (a stop to the battles being fought) between the Allied nations (including the United States) and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
On that day, the world was hopeful that they had just experienced the last war ever to be fought, and the official end to the war was eventually declared. For that reason, November 11, 1918, was generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
As we know, World War I did not end all wars, but the significance of that moment when the brutal fighting came to an end is why Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11th each year.
The important purpose of Veterans Day is to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
