Homestead Students Recognized at Mock Trial Competition

Homestead High School recently participated in the Mock Trial Competition in South Bend, Indiana. Sponsored by the Indiana Bar Association, Mock Trial introduces Indiana students to our legal system and the judicial branch of government. Through Mock Trial, students get a deeper understanding and appreciation of the American courts.
Taking on the roles of attorneys and witnesses, students take part in hands-on, in-depth learning that helps them to develop an understanding of and appreciation for our society’s approach to dispute resolution and justice. Students take case background information and witness statements and apply these to the law. They craft arguments, support their case through testimony and physical evidence, and present to a panel of attorneys, judges, and community members who evaluate their arguments and presentations.
Mock Trial is aligned to the Indiana Academic Standards for Social Studies and English Language Arts. Students grow both academically and personally through this experience. The competition is an opportunity to practice important 21st century life skills, including collaboration, critical thinking, leadership, and creativity. This event also requires literacy skills, including public speaking, writing, listening, and reading.
Our Spartans worked incredibly hard researching and practicing for this competition. Participants included Khadijah Abdul-Rahman, Brishti Adhikari, Henry Centlivre, Macy DeVries, Alex Farkas, Tara Jung, Cerine Kara, Lenora Lock, Emma Munoz, Caya Nelson, Siera Schuessler, Makora Stacey, Camilia Tran, Audrey West, Simone Wilson, and Graham Witte. Special recognition to Emma and Caya, who received Outstanding Witness Awards, and Simone, Cerine and Makora, who were recognized as Outstanding Attorneys at this event.
