National Merit Semifinalists

Homestead High School is proud to announce the names of the semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students are Nathan Houser, Kathan Raju, Gabrielle Waterman, Ethan Gersos, Claire Elliott, Adelyn Schafer, Malia Sanghvi, Carson Geoglein, Carolyn Chen, Melody Sutter, and Lauren Cabe.

In early September, roughly 16,000 students (1/3 of the 50,000 high scorers) were notified they have qualified as a semifinalist, designated on a state-representational basis. Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state. Qualifying scores vary from state to state and year to year, but the scores of all semifinalists are extremely high. National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) provides scholarship application materials to semifinalists through their high schools.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier qualifying test performance. The semifinalist and a school official have to submit a scholarship application that includes a self-descriptive essay and information about their participation and leadership in school and local activities. In the National Merit Scholarship Program, three types of Merit Scholarship awards are offered to finalists: National Merit $2500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.

Congratulations to all the semifinalists!
